Upholding new academic policy, a university professor tells a devout young Muslim woman to remove her headscarf in order to write a final exam.  Seeing her distress, the young man beside her finds a “strategic” way to guard her privacy. Do prohibitions against wearing religious attire in public institutions and public space undermine religious rights, personal rights, and/or women’s rights?

Are prohibitions against wearing religious attire in public institutions and public space defensible in societies that embrace the UN Declaration of Human Rights?

Some states have enshrined “Secularism” in their constitutions, seeing this as a means to protecting the religious freedom of all. Respond.
